Although polystyrene (PS) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) are well-known semiconducting polymers with strong environmental and thermal stability, their electrochemical and electrical properties are highly limited in their small molecular structures. To address this limitation, we have developed a novel concept of a high-performance semiconducting polymer nanocomposite using coaxial nanotechnology. A polyhedral gold nanocage-polystyrene (AuNC-PS) was prepared by the wet-chemical method, and then an electropolymerization of PEDOT:PSS was carried out on the surface of the AuNC-PS. PEDOT:PSS was polymerized in situ on AuNC-PS by electrochemical polymerization at room temperature without using the PEDOT:PSS precursor. Using AuNC-PS as a template, PEDOT:PSS had the dual roles of the electrically conductive core and the thermal and solvent-resistance shell. The conductivity of PEDOT:PSS at the electrical percolation threshold was ∼0.03 S cm-1. The shell thickness was maximized at AuNC-PS with a AuNC core diameter of ∼10 nm. The conductivity of PEDOT:PSS at 700 °C under vacuum was ∼10 times greater than that of conventional PEDOT:PSS.
